Project description:
"I need a browser-based tool that lets users point a camera at a vehicle’s registration plate (or type the number manually) and instantly see when the car was last inspected and when the next yearly inspection is due. The workflow is straightforward: the web app captures the plate number, sends it to the official government database over a secure connection, retrieves the most recent inspection record, then displays both the last inspection date and the due-by date in a clean, mobile-friendly interface.
Although this is a web application, it must behave smoothly on phones and tablets so drivers on both iOS and Android can open the site, grant camera permission, scan, and get results without installing anything. A simple desktop view is welcome, but responsive mobile performance is the priority.
Core requirements
• Camera-based plate recognition (OCR/ALPR) with a fallback manual input field
• Secure API integration to the government inspection database (I will provide any available endpoints or credentials)
• Clear presentation of: last inspection date, days remaining until next inspection, and a colour-coded status (green = up to date, red = overdue, amber = due soon)
• Lightweight, responsive front-end that loads quickly under mobile data speeds
• Error handling for unreadable plates, database timeouts, or plates not found
• Basic analytics/logging so I can track usage and error rates
Acceptance criteria
– A test URL I can open on iOS Safari and Android Chrome that accesses the camera, recognises plates from sample images, and returns correct inspection data from the live or sandbox government API
– Source code with clear documentation on how to deploy, configure environment variables, and update API keys
– All third-party libraries clearly listed and licensed
Tech stack is flexible—React, Vue, or vanilla JS on the front end and any lightweight back-end (Node, Python, etc.) that securely proxies the government API—but keep dependencies minimal and performance high." (client-provided description)
