"The Export to Excel feature in my PHP CodeIgniter app suddenly stopped producing a file. Up until recently the same controller method generated the spreadsheet without any problems, so I know the logic can work; it simply no longer does. No download prompt appears and nothing is written to disk, so the issue is “Excel file not being generated” rather than bad data or formatting.

What I need
• Identify the root cause inside the existing CodeIgniter controller/model (or the helper we use for Excel).
• Restore the export so a valid .xlsx file is generated and downloaded just as before.
• Keep all other application functions intact and document the fix with a short comment or read-me note so I can track the change.

Environment
PHP 7.x on Apache, CodeIgniter 3.1.x. We previously relied on PHPExcel (now PhpSpreadsheet) but I’m open to whatever is quickest and keeps the current workflow.

Acceptance criteria
– Clicking “Export” triggers a browser download of a readable Excel file.
– File opens in Excel without warnings.
– No new errors appear in logs.
