"Project Description
I am looking for an experienced Web Developer (or development team) to create a high-performance digital document-sharing and discovery platform, functionally similar to [login to view URL] or Academia.edu.
The platform must be robust, scalable, SEO-focused, and optimized for handling very large volumes of content (documents) to drive long-term organic traffic growth (to ensure maximum indexation by search engines, particularly Google)
Preferred Technology: WordPress. I prefer the website to be built on WordPress for scalability, easier management, plugin ecosystem, and future flexibility. However, I am open to professional advice if another framework would be significantly better for handling SEO and bulk uploads.
Main Features & Requirements
1. Digital Document Library: A secure platform where users can upload and access a wide variety of content/ documents.
2. User Upload & Sharing: Support for Word (.doc/.docx) and PDF files, with the ability to upload and share documents easily. The upload process should be simple, intuitive, and secure . Users can upload multiple documents at once efficientl
3. Content Discovery: Advanced browsing and search system for exploring and discover new content such as academic papers, documents, manuals, and e-books.
4. Free Access Model: All visitors must be able to read all documents for free (ad-supported model is implied) - (future monetization may include ads or premium features)
SEO & Indexing (Critical Requirement)
5. The website must be architected for high SEO performance.
6. Each uploaded document must generate an individual webpage, fully crawlable and indexable by Google.
7. Clean, descriptive, SEO-friendly URLs.
8. Optimized metadata (title tags, meta descriptions).
9. Native HTML text rendering from extracted content (not just embedded files) for maximum Google indexation.
10. Fast page load times, mobile-first responsive design.
Bulk Upload System (High Priority)
11. I already own approx. 100,000 documents that must be uploaded to the site in bulk/batch automatically upon launch. The system must process this high volume efficiently, ensuring each document immediately becomes a separate, indexable webpage. Smart categorization for easy navigation. The system must support bulk/batch automatic uploading. Each document must instantly become a separate, indexable webpage.
12. Efficient storage: Developer must propose the best approach (database text extraction vs. file-based) to balance SEO visibility and storage efficiency. For the best possible Google indexation and organic traffic, I require a solution that maximizes visibility.
• My Strong Recommendation (Developer to Confirm): The best approach for maximum SEO benefit is to implement a process that extracts the full text from the uploaded DOC/PDF/DOCX files and stores this text within the database (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL, or a suitable NoSQL alternative). Benefit: This allows the full content of the document to be rendered directly as native HTML text on the dedicated document page. Google treats native HTML text as the most authoritative content, leading to excellent keyword indexing and long-tail traffic. The original files can be stored separately (on a cloud service like Google Drive) for download purposes, but the display should be based on the extracted text.
13. Google Analytics or custom analytics integration.
14. Content categorization tools, recommendations
15. Security
• Protection against excessive scraping, DDoS attacks, and SQL injection.
• Secure file handling & backups.
• Basic copyright/DMCA takedown system.
Future Monetization Options (Phase 2, not required now)
• Ad system (Google AdSense or proprietary).
• Premium accounts for unlimited uploads or downloads.
• Social sharing features.
• User profiles.
UI/UX Expectations
• Clean, minimalist design, similar to Academia.edu.
• Mobile-first, responsive, SEO-friendly layout.
Hosting / Deployment
• Preferred: WordPress implementation with optimized hosting (e.g., AWS, Cloudways, Kinsta, or similar). Developer should recommend the most cost-efficient, scalable infrastructure.
Requirements & Deliverables
Requirements:
• Proven experience with large-scale, content-heavy platforms.
• Strong knowledge of WordPress custom development (themes, plugins, database optimization).
• Deep knowledge of SEO best practices (site structure, schema markup, speed optimization).
• Clean, secure, well-documented code.
Deliverables:
• Fully functional, production-ready WordPress website.
• Bulk upload system for 100,000+ documents.
• Documentation for future maintenance & scaling.
• Final consultation on the most efficient document storage & indexing method.
