"I’m building a small, self-contained audio module around the ESP32 and need firmware that can take an incoming AC3 bit-stream delivered over I²S from a Toslink transceiver, decode it in real time, and hand the resulting PCM back out over I²S to my downstream audio processor. The target format is 24-bit, 48 kHz, so everything from the decoder, buffering strategy, and I²S configuration has to sustain that rate without artifacts or dropouts. AC3 audio source is 32kps to 640kbs, sample rate 32, 44.1 and 48KHz, max 5.1 channel.

The job is purely digital; there is no speaker-level stage, no storage, and no post-processing other than whatever latency management or buffering the codec itself requires. I’m working inside ESP-IDF, so the finished work should slot straight into that environment (C or C++, FreeRTOS-aware). If you prefer to leverage an existing open-source decoder such as liba52 or ffmpeg’s AC3 (e.g. [login to view URL] ) component, that’s fine as long as you document licensing details and can demonstrate it running within the ESP32’s RAM/flash limits.

For clarity, here’s how I will accept the work:
• Complete ESP-IDF project with source, CMakeLists, sdkconfig settings, and any third-party libraries.
• Build instructions that reproduce your binary from a clean checkout.
• A brief README covering CPU load, RAM usage, and preferrably measured end-to-end latency at 24 bit/48 kHz.
• Proof-of-life: a logic-analyzer capture or short video that shows the ESP32 receiving AC3 over I²S, decoding it, and streaming valid PCM on the I²S TX pins. Or an alternative agreed by both sides.
