"My website’s current sign-in flow is limited to a simple email + password check, and that is no longer enough for the audience I serve. I need the entire authentication layer upgraded so users must pass a secure multi-factor step (e.g., TOTP app code, SMS, or comparable) after their usual credentials.

You will receive access to the existing codebase and a brief architecture overview on acceptance. I expect you to evaluate how our present session management works, recommend the most suitable MFA method for the stack, and then integrate it without disrupting any other feature or database schema. Front-end prompts, back-end verification, fallback handling, and thorough testing are all part of the scope.

Deliverables
• Working multi-factor authentication integrated into the live sign-in flow
• Source code and any new dependencies documented clearly in README/update notes
• A concise test plan showing how to reproduce and verify the MFA step in staging

The solution must be compatible with modern browsers and mobile devices and remain extensible in case we later add social logins. Clear, commented code and straightforward deployment instructions will be the final acceptance criteria." (client-provided description)
