"I need help making a simple, stand-alone script that will get/check the updated date from a MySQL date column every few (ie 3) seconds for potentially thousands of users. (Maybe every 10 seconds might work too)

I think I need SSE because I won't have to necessarily push anything to the server - I just need to check the date.

I have a decent VPS.

I understand php, JavaScript and a little about SSE.
