Puerto Rico Energy Audit Tool:
Product Requirements Document
Overview
The Puerto Rico Energy Audit Tool was developed to provide weatherization and energy auditors with a structured, standardized method for collecting and analyzing household energy data. Delivered as a spreadsheet, it guides auditors through key areas of a home—including building envelope, appliances, mechanical systems, and health and safety considerations—while capturing essential information for program compliance and reporting. The tool was designed to streamline field audits, ensure consistency across assessments, and support decision-making for energy efficiency upgrades in Puerto Rican homes.
The Puerto Rico Green Energy Trust (PRGET) seeks to transform its complex spreadsheet-based audit tool into a mobile-friendly web application that allows energy auditors to easily enter household data, run automated calculations, and generate consistent, standardized audit reports. This document provides the key features and characteristics that we are looking for.
Key Features
1. Front-End Data Collection
o Responsive, mobile-friendly (usable on tablets/phones in the field) web-based tool.
o Pre-established fields aligned with audit categories (rooms, appliances, systems, incidental repairs, etc.).
o Support for photo uploads and notes.
o Validation rules to ensure completeness (e.g., all mandatory fields entered before submission).
2. Backend Calculations
o Translates input into modeled energy performance metrics.
o Runs algorithms to calculate efficiency scores, estimated consumption, and retrofit recommendations.
3. Audit Report Generation
o Automatic creation of a standardized, professional-looking PDF report.
o Report includes:
Home energy score/summary
Estimated annual energy costs
Recommended energy efficiency improvements
4. Data Management & Storage
o Upon submission, data is stored in a cloud-based database (SharePoint preferred).
o Enables secure storage, retrieval, and future aggregation for program reporting.
o Exportable data (CSV, PDF reports).
o Stretch goal: Role-based access (e.g., auditors, admins, homeowners).
5. Accessibility
o The tool will be non-proprietary: no special licenses or fees required.
o Built using widely available technologies.
o Can be easily updated or modified by PRGET or partners as needed.
o Source code may be shared publicly to encourage transparency and adaptability.
Success Criteria
• Reports are generated instantly upon submission.
• Stretch goal: Database supports querying and aggregating data for grant reporting.
Example
A comparable model is the DOE’s Home Energy Score tool, which provides a standardized report based on audit inputs. Our tool will follow a similar structure—data entry, backend processing, and report generation—but will be aligned with PRGET’s program needs.
