1. Case Study 1: An Automatic Vending machine
An automatic vending machine sells snacks and drinks. It has an LCD touch screen that allows the customer to select items. The customer then can validate his order, the machine shows on the screen the total amount due. The customer is requested to select a mode of payment, he can either pay with a MADA/Visa card or with cash. When the payment is accepted, the machine delivers the items from a trap. The customer can call for assistance using the touch screen if he has a problem with the machine.
The machine is maintained by an operator that fills it with items from time to time and also checks if the machine is working properly. If any technical problems happen to the machine, the operator may make a quick repair on site if the problem is simple otherwise, he may request from the company to replace the machine in order to take the machine to the company’s workshop and make the more complex repair operations there.

2. Case Study 2: A web-based Air Fleet Real-time Visualization Tool
A new air flights company wants to build the following air fleet real-time visualization tool:
The software system is web-based. It allows an air fleet control agent to visualize the positions in real-time of all the current flights on a 2D map. The flights positions are loaded from an existing database. This database is constantly updated with data from another system (a GPS data collector system). The database contains data about current flights with the latest known GPS position of each current flight. It also contains data about the latest known GPS position of airplanes that are not flying currently. The flight controller can also view the positions of all these planes that are stopped in airports. He can choose to localize a particular flight using its flight number or a particular plane using its code. When clicking on a particular plane on the map, the fleet control agent can get more details about the selected flight/plane like the source and destination (for flights), the number of passengers, the speed, the departure time and the expected arrival time, and for stopped planes, he can see the latest flight, the next flight information, the time of the latest arrival at the current airport, the time of the next expected departure and an estimation of the stoppage costs.
