"I’m building a new freelance marketplace that will connect more than 85 million professionals worldwide and I need the first core module in place: a full-featured messaging system. The platform itself is a freelance marketplace, not a generic job board or networking site, so every technical decision should keep the flow of project discussions, proposal negotiations, and ongoing collaboration in mind.

What I need right now
• A messaging layer that supports real-time chat and reliable message notifications between any two verified users.
• Smooth, instantaneous delivery—WebSockets or a comparable push technology is expected so conversations feel as immediate as WhatsApp or Slack.
• A clean, responsive interface that slots into my existing React front end (I’ll share the repo once we start).
• Secure storage and retrieval of chat history, adhering to basic GDPR principles since our user base is global.

Nice-to-have (not required for this milestone)
• File sharing inside the chat window. If you have a ready approach, outline it so I can budget it in later.

Acceptance criteria
1. Two authenticated users can open a chat and see each other’s messages appear in real time.
2. Browser tab, desktop, and mobile push notifications fire instantly on new messages.
3. All messages persist in a database (MongoDB or Postgres—your recommendation is welcome) and reload correctly on page refresh.
4. Code is delivered in a git branch with clear setup instructions plus a Postman collection to demonstrate the API endpoints.
