"I’m running a WordPress-based local directory ([login to view URL]) and the core theme is in place, but the search experience still feels basic. My priority right now is to tighten up that area with focused functionality improvements—specifically, smarter search enhancements that let visitors find listings quickly and accurately. At the moment at the core to search for a business its the 2 field WHERE and WHAT form fields but they use an auto select drop down base on the characters the user enters and it may work for LOCATION but its lacking so we want to improve both the WHERE and WHAT fields:

1) WHAT FIELD - It seems to watch to give results within the search form based on the location you set and the characters you type. It doesn't give for a good search experience. We'd like suggestions on option for how we could improve this for ultimate user experience. Rather then it trying to find a listing in the search we think the user may want to be able to search and the results give them every listing that matched to their search by relevancy and they can choose.

2) WHERE Field - it goes by the cities added in admin but in the locations there may be multiple suburbs within the city that people will want to search by as its how they search on Google and currently we don't allow them to search by their suburb it just presents the one city.


Here’s what I have in mind:
• An upgraded search component that can handle more precise queries (think dynamic filtering, location awareness, or even auto-suggest if that proves the best route).
• Seamless integration with the existing theme so styling, page speed, and mobile responsiveness remain intact.
• Clean, well-documented code or a lightweight plugin solution that I can maintain going forward.

If you’ve previously fine-tuned directory searches—leveraging WordPress hooks, custom queries, or AJAX for real-time results—I’d love to see your approach. Once the enhancement is live, I’ll test against sample listings to confirm accuracy and performance before signing off.
