"I have an existing Android application that needs a thorough rebuild. Right now, dark mode simply refuses to activate, and the Settings button sits unresponsive, so those two issues are top priority. While we are in the codebase, I also want to seize the opportunity to make the app faster, refresh the user interface, and bolt on a few new features we have on our roadmap.

Here is what I need delivered:

• Dark mode activation fully functional across all screens, following Material Design guidelines.
• Settings button restored so it reliably opens its intended screen and handles user input without crashes.
• Noticeable performance optimization—startup time trimmed, scrolling smoother, and memory usage reduced.
• A modern UI overhaul in line with the latest Android design patterns (feel free to suggest Jetpack Compose if that speeds things up).
• Integration of the additional functionalities we will specify together once you review the current code.

You will be working with the existing repository (Android Studio, Java/Kotlin mix). Clean, well-commented commits are important because this code will continue to evolve after your work is merged. A test APK plus source code will mark each milestone complete, and I will handle real-device testing on my end.
