The Fact:
- Some Windows Apps such as Copilot, Notepad, Paint, Photo, Snipping Tool, Phone Link, My Devices, etc in C:\Program Files\WindowsApps folder lost Trust Label (SYSTEM_PROCESS_TRUST_LABEL_ACE_TYPE) ACE in the new copied file.
- The reason is because the normal copy method (robocopy) does not copy the label ACE from SACL.
How To Re-produce?
- Step 1: Go to C:\Program Files folder. Show Hidden item. You will see WindowsApps folder. But you can’t get in because of permission.
- Step 2: Change owner for the WindowsApps to current logged in user. Remember checking the checkbox to populate the permissions to the children. You will see many apps.
- Find 3 folders (somewhere below, close to the bottom) that have Notepad in the name.
- Run FileTest tool or icacls command to see the ACL of a Notepad folder (inside WindowsApps folder). You will see the S-1-19-512-4096.
- Step 3: Copy out 3 Notepad folders out to the Desktop.
- Step 4: run FileTest tool or icacls command again on the file you just copied to the Desktop. It will see that there are no S-1-19-512-4096
